The scam compounds that have flourished in Myanmar’s lawless borderlands are largely staffed by foreigners, many of whom were allegedly trafficked and forced to work swindling people around the world. Many of the workers come from China, and those who have escaped reported a troubling accusation – that many of the people running scam centres appear to be their countrymen. The reports also indicate that in addition to Myanmar, a Chinese-dominated scam network is reportedly spanning southeast Asia, in a dark industry that involves some of China’s most infamous crime figures.
